The “SJ,” which stands for “Small Jumbo,” is a guitar size initiated or promoted by the Gibson Company back in 1951.  This new “figure-8” shaped “Spanish” guitar provided a new choice for the contemporary guitar player seeking to own an acoustic that is considerably smaller than the 17” wide King of the Flattop Guitars – the lordly J-200 – but which, instead, is comfortable to hold, being only 16” across at the lower bout.  Being made from spruce with maple back and sides, it is an instrument that produces the volume and clarity required to dominate the room in which it is used.

This is a wonderful sounding 12-fret solid headstock guitar, whose headplate is Madagascar veneer bearing the iridescent Collings script logo in pearl; tuners are Waverly open-gear with metal butterbean buttons; the unbound striped ebony fingerboard (it has some lovely reddish brown grain running through) hosts 5 etched diamond inlays in frets 5, 7 and 9; the soundhole rosette is comprised of three concentric circles of multi-ply purfling, the center one of which is 9 plies of ebony and ivoroid.

'OM' stands for "Orchestra Model," but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. Yet flatpickers also find it appealing, and when the graceful cutaway is added these OMs are often used by lead players who routinely explore all 20 frets much as they would on an electric guitar. The compact shape makes the Collings OM equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the relatively shallow body (barely over 4 inches deep) results in balanced tone and an immediate response.

This extremely fine, beautifully made instrument has a Honduran mahogany body and neck with a satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish, East Indian rosewood fretboard and veneer, traditional single-point headstock and geared tuning pegs.  It also sounds absolutely amazing.

This extremely fine sounding, handsome guitar is made from solid East Indian rosewood for the sides, back, East Indian veneer for the headplate overlay, solid ebony for the fingerboard and bridge.   Said fingerboard is inlaid with 5 etched squares in 3 positions on frets 5, 7 and 9.  The drop-in bridge saddle is bone and compensated and the bridge pins are ebony with mother of pearl dots.

Even in their least example mandolin model Collings continues the standard of perfection of design and execution for which they are famous. The top is so close-grained as to create eddies and pools of medullary rays (cross-silking), the maple on the sides, back and neck is curly and striped.  This one has the standard 1 1/8" fingerboard width at the nut.

Strikingly beautiful in its elegant simplicity, this guitar starts with the extremely dark Brazilian rosewood headstock overlay featuring the shockingly white Collings script inlaid pearl logo and the six shiny nickel plated Waverly tuners with the open-gears and butterbean buttons. The nut and saddle are bone, as are most of us.

It is housed in a deluxe TKL “American Vintage Series” plush-lined, retro-looking hard shell case. This model is made from exemplary East Indian rosewood on the back and sides, a select Adirondack “Red” spruce top; it has grained ivoroid binding, prewar style scalloped bracing, a herringbone top border, crosscut grained ivoroid and wood strip rosette, a tortoise style pickguard.

The MT is Collings' entry-level satin finish A-model with simplified appointments. But don't let the "entry-level" part fool you- it is built with the same quality construction as their higher end models. With a fully carved Englemann spruce top and maple back and sides, the MT is undoubtedly one of the best values out there in a professional quality A-style mandolin.

“290” is another highway that cuts through Austin, Texas. What a great idea! It’s so difficult to name new instruments. This model features a solid mahogany body, high gloss lacquer finish, twin custom P-90-style pickups by Jason Lollar, a Tone-Pro bridge and tailpiece, it is available with either black or amber top hat volume and tone knobs.

The OM-3 has the same appointments as the Collings OM-2H, without the herringbone border and with the addition of select abalone, black/white wood and nitrate strip rosette, bound fingerboard and double-bound peghead, no fingerboard inlay, gold Waverly tuners.
