On the oval paper label somebody has written the initials “GWO” which we think is pronounced “Guh-whoa!!” And that’s exactly what we said when we first saw this.
This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful acoustic guitars we have seen pass, like a stone, through our portal. The Brazilian rosewood on the back and sides are swirly, and full of color and nuance. The Brazilian headplate is darker and more dignified (the Golem that’s more solemn). Said headplate is contrasted dramatically by the gold-plated, butterbean-button Waverly brand (high quality) tuning machines and the polished bone and perfectly crafted nut. This guitar’s nut width is 1 ¾” and the string spacing at the bridge is 2 3/16th”. It is long scale at 25.5” nut to saddle. The saddle is likewise bone and compensated, the bridge pins are crème with black dots and so is the end piece. Body bindings are flame Koa, bordered on the front in black-crème-black on the on the two sides and the back in black and crème, just like my caw-fee. The backstripe, which measures 19 11/16th” and is comprised of arrowheads in brown, crème and black. The wedge-shaped end graft at the bottom side is Brazilian rosewood. The back of the neck is one piece of mahogany and has a diamond dart carved behind the nut.
The headstock itself is bordered in a thin white purfling and the ebony fingerboard is capped on three sides with a polished ebony binding. Its soundhole is comprised of three concentric circles, the outer two being black-crème-black and the middle being a wide swatch of abalone bordered on each side by black-crème-black. The Adirondack spruce top is 100% flawless – a completely clear – a 16” wide (at the lower bout) construction of wide-grained Red Spruce that knows from no aberration of any kind. The instrument is in 95% condition – as excellent plus as can be – and you can count the number of tiny signs of use and wear on the fingers of one hand. There’s an infinitely small ding on the headplate, a slight scratch from a string rotation, a miniature scuff or chip of the lacquer over the Koa binding on the lower treble edge, a few extremely shirt button marks on the back. That’s just 4; you don’t even need the entire hand to count. This guitar sounds like thunder on the mountains, and it is so beautiful and made at a level of perfection that may cause grown men to wring their hands from anguish as last seen in a well known play by Euripides, based upon the myth of Jason and Medea – first produced in 431. That’s 431 the year, not Room 431 at Hillside (NJ) High School where the Drama Department was located.
