Collings (used, 2014) OM3G-SS Varnish Acoustic Guitar

Tag No 32-4247 Used

#23099, in “as new” condition, with the original hard shell case.

With a Yip of the Hat to Edgar Yipsel Harburg we were just thinking: “What makes a king out of a slave; what makes the flag on the mast to wave? What makes the elephant charge his tusk, in the misty mist or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder; what makes the dawn come up like thunder? What makes the Hottentot so hot; what puts the ‘ape’ in apricot?” What have they got that most guitars ain’t got? Well, actually, it’s Varnish! Yes, a guitar’s best friend, comprised of a resin (a Resin to Believe) - and that can either be resins from a tree or synthetic ones – that’s cooked in an oil which could include sunflower, or tung or linseed or others, and either a thinner or a solvent (could be something like paint thinner or turpentine) plus a drying oil to form a protective film or finish. It cures by way of oxidation. When you combine the ingredients with additional oil you have something called “oil varnish.’ Possibly this is more information than you really wanted to hear.  What you really need to hear is this actual guitar!

Collings breaks with tradition by calling this model an OM "Short Scale" (24-7/8”).   In fretted instrument parlance, a short scale Auditorium model is more commonly called a "OOO."   But hey, if that's what they want to call it, who are we to criticize?  German Spruce top with select abalone rosette, grained ivoroid top/back/neck/peghead binding.  Right now the guitar is not wearing its tortoise style pickguard, but does have one, which resides inside its TKL deluxe hard shell case.   The guitar has a modified V neck profile with 2 ¼” string spacing with a 1-3/4” nut.  This guitar sports six gold Waverly brand brass geared tuners, one-piece mahogany neck and an ivoroid heel cap.   It also has the black/white wood purfling with a 3-style mosaic back strip.   Collings Varnish Masterpieces seem to be from another world – a world of extremely select tone woods and wondrous workmanship, where the notion of compromise is unheard of.

The entire instrument is as well-preserved as a guitar can be; one would be hard pressed to find signs of human contact.    It has earned the title of “as new” condition which means that it is a recently made piece which was owned briefly, but whose warranty was not registered with the manufacturer; it is in perfect new condition.
