Gibson (used, 1917) F-4 Mandolin

Tag No 32-4149 Used

#35616, in excellent plus (near mint) condition with original black hard shell Gibson case.

The F-4 model Gibson was their highest mandolin model until it was superseded in 1922 by the famous Lloyd Loar F-5.   Up until that fateful day all Gibson carved top and back mandolins had the oval soundhole, as has this, and being the senior model this has a bound soundhole, rope marquetry and celluloid soundhole decoration (rosette), a long and fancy mother of pearl torch inlaid peghead bearing the “The Gibson” script pearl inlaid logo above it.

Each Handel tuner button is inlaid to depict a flower on each side of each button in pearl and nickel-silver wire.   The top and back are bound in single-ply ivoroid, as are the fingerboard and peghead.  The carved back is comprised of two bookmatched pieces of flame maple, the sides are maple and the neck is birch.  The back and front of the peghead are black; the neck shows almost no wear on its finish, and the body and peghead likewise show just light signs of use and wear:  minor light scratches, dings, scuffs, and some minor signs of finish checking on the headstock.  This mandolin retains its large (bulbous bottomed) celluloid pickguard with the Mar. 30, ’09 patent date and the twin “Pat. July 4, 1911” patent date side clamps, and it retains its standard “The Gibson” and floral pattern tailpiece cover.    The bridge is the standard Gibson one-piece ebony with the small felt-lined hole for the pickguard stabilizing rod to stick through.

There is a small, short hairline (surface) crack off of the lower point on the body, as well as a crack on the underside of the point both typical for this year mandolin.  There is also a small crack on the upper bout treble side.  Our repair shop will be repairing and gluing all cracks and give this mandolin a fresh setup and restring.

All in all this is a remarkably clean and wholly original condition and it is extremely beautiful. It sounds rich, full and decadent like a double chocolate Savoy truffle covered in melted vanilla ice cream. Ummm – ummm!

Our Price is $6,600.00.
