Gibson (used, 1954) Les Paul Gold Top Electric Guitar

Tag No 32-4008 Used

#4 1432, all original, in excellent condition, with the original hard shell case.

The original Gibson Gold Top Les Paul guitar is legendary, in so many ways. The years in which they had a "stop" tailpiece are considered extremely desirable (as opposed to the original period when they had the long trapeze). This is a fine one, as always, for your perusal. Eric says: “The neck is meaty and it plays ideally. It was just set up at our shop.” Its weight is 8 lbs 14.5 ounces. The output on the bridge pickup is 7.42 ohms and the neck pickup is 7.30 ohms.

Here are the notes of our head of repair: The tuners are original “no-logo” Kluson bearing “2356766 Pat. Appl.” The truss rod cover is original and the nut and frets are original. The pickups (twin “soap bar” P-90s) are original P-90 single coils with original covers. The wraparound tailpiece is original; the toggle tip (pickup selector) is replaced and there is no toggle switch surround. The pickguard is original, and so are the volume and tone knobs. The input jack and its plate are original. The potentiometers are original and bear code 134319 which means they were made by Central Lab and dated the 19th week of 1953. The brown back plates (toggle and control cavities) are original.

The finish is original, showing normal signs of use and wear including nicks around the edges (and elsewhere) on top, back, sides, back of neck and headplate. It shows finish checking overall but especially on the back of the neck; finish is chipped just below the three-way toggle switch, there are chips out of the back of the neck behind 2nd and 3rd fret and elsewhere. In addition there are typical scuffs, scrapes, scratches, light buckle marks on the back, normal oxidation (rust) on pickup magnets. The hard case displays the plaque with the Gibson logo and a star. The research we have done suggests that this logo and star was prevalent in the mid ‘50s. The case handle is replaced.

The twin strap buttons appear original. This guitar displays the standard configuration of a pearl inlaid, postwar script Gibson logo in this instance positioned a bit low on the headstock – the top edge of the “b” is ¾” below the bass side swell at the top of the headstock. Below this is “Les Paul” in script gold decal and “MODEL” in block gold decal, positioned horizontally; below that is the white bordered truss rod cover. The dark Brazilian rosewood fingerboard is inlaid with 9 pearloid trapezoids and bound in crème ivoroid. The top is likewise bound in crème ivoroid; the knobs are gold cylinders, each numbered 1-10.

This is a glorious and beautiful Gibson solid body electric guitar from the golden period of the 1950s. It is largely factory original condition with few and minor aberrations, and would be the prize that awaits a player who is seeking to document his or her success in life with a rare and desirable, collectible, memorable and powerful music machine from the “golden” period (pun intended).
