Its top is bordered in “rope” wood marquetry of alternating crème and black parallelograms, and the top has twin rings of rope that form a sort of slightly separated, wide herringbone appearance.  The bridge is ebony and has a rolled (compensated) bone drop-in saddle; the sides are bound in rosewood with a thin line of ebony-spruce-ebony on each border and also the back; the back stripe is small zipper wood marquetry.

DRS1 Dreadnought marks the return of Martin’s Road Series, which was originally introduced in 2001, designed for working and traveling guitarists on a modest budget, who require their instrument to be durable without giving up the quality of its sound. The top, back and sides are crafted of solid sapele and braced for resonance and projection. The DRS1 neck is built with multilaminate Stratabond™ for extra rigidity and durability, and the belly bridge and fingerboard are made of Richlite™ that achieves a similar look to ebony. 'OM' stands for "Orchestra Model," but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. Yet flatpickers also find it appealing, and when the graceful cutaway is added these OMs are often used by lead players who routinely explore all 20 frets much as they would on an electric guitar. The compact shape makes the Collings OM equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the relatively shallow body (barely over 4 inches deep) results in balanced tone and an immediate response.

One of the finest sounding (and most beautiful) new OM-model guitars you will ever have had the happiness to play, this barely used -- pretty much dead mint instrument (purchased October of 2008 and it appears to never have been played, which is why we keep it in its original hard shell case, not on display).

This guitar, whose original cherry finish is unfaded and nearly unworn, is in amazingly clean condition -- a virtual time capsule. We have never before seen a Gibson Les Paul Junior original cherry double cutaway maintained at this remarkable level of preservation.  That's really saying something!   If you are seeking more excitement than many a body can stand, this is the guitar for you.

James D’Aquisto, born November 9, 1935 was trained by, and is the successor to, John D’Angelico. Both men are considered to be the finest independent builders of archtop guitars in the history of the instrument. James apprenticed to John, starting in the 1950s, possibly as early as 1954. Jimmy said “I was making $35 a week. I was like the runner: I’d go to the stores, pick up the tuners, go get the tailpieces from downtown, take the necks to the engraver, all that. I cleaned the windows, swept the floors, everything – we all did that.

On the oval paper label somebody has written the initials “GWO” which we think is pronounced “Guh-whoa!!”    And that’s exactly what we said when we first saw this.

Careful acoustic research has resulted in the full, rich and warm sound of this popular model. Two single coil pickups on a full size body are accented by a traditionally shaped sound hole. The 24 fret Rosewood fingerboard is punctuated by dot inlay fret markers, with full double cutaways permitting access to all the frets. The Gibson L-4 dates back all the way to 1912 (gee, that’s a hundred years ago) when it was a 16” guitar with an oval shaped soundhole and had a “The Gibson” inlaid logo.   The logo became just plain “Gibson” in the middle of 1928 and in 1935 a bunch of exciting things happened to it.  First of all it got twin f-holes, it was decorated with a Fleur-de-Lis on the headstock as homage to the areas first settled by the French, such as Louisiana and the Mississippi River Basin but it also appears on many European coats-of-arms and flags.
