Martin (new) 028VS 12-fret slothead Vintage Series

Tag No 32-4257 New

#1856293, with Geib model 515 plush lined reissue-style hard shell case.

C F Martin reissued a “V” series interpretation of their prewar Concert-sized East Indian rosewood sides and back, fine Sitka spruce top guitar, which harkens back to the period 1870s to the early 1930s twelve-fret slothead with the herringbone top trim – craved by many, actually seen by few. The original examples just do not seem to circulate. We, ourselves, feel that this body shape, size and appointments epitomize the vision we have of the Martin guitar of a hundred years ago. To us (and especially to George Hergen, the King of the Twelve-Fret Acoustic) this is as beautiful a Vintage Series guitar as can be imagined.

We went to the Martin factory in 2005 seeking to initiate a special run of “Mandolin Brothers’ 35th Anniversary” guitars but the model we wanted them to make for us was . . . um .. . . this model – the 0-28 herringbone! They told us that they were, themselves, working on debuting this very model, so the idea of the 35th Anniversary got put off and we are now planning our 50th Anniversary model, which won’t be for a few more years, but we’ll get started soon. It is with considerable personal happiness, then, that we display to you a wonderful scalloped braced thing with a 1 7/8” first fret fingerboard width, a squared, slotted headstock with the old, small, script C F Martin & Co. headstock decal, actual Waverly brand nickel-plated side-mounted tuning machines with nickel butterbean buttons, a short scale of 24.9” nut to saddle, bone components for the tone of doom, grained ivoroid body bindings and butt splice (or wedgie), a zipper wood marquetry backstripe and a diamond carved dart behind the nart. The back is nicely appointed with crème and black purfling and the top is circumcised (is the word ‘circumvented?’) with small herringbone parquetry. The 3 9/16” diameter soundhole is buttressed with three concentric rings of black and crème fiber marquetry. This model is provided you with no pickguard which means that the top is free to vibrate its pretty little face off, but you may have to be more careful when picking. And picking you shall do with this fetching yet diminutive (only 13 ½” wide) celestial chord-caster. Its sound is scintillating, its beauty bountiful.
