Wunderlicht (used, 2008) William Boucher Year 1846 Style Minstrel

Tag No 59-0029 Used

#ISI1879, primitively designed 5-string fretless banjo, with a used and worn Stelling banjo case that has been modified (bottom cut) to hold it.

Per the Wunderlich website:  William E. Boucher Jr. Of Baltimore, MD was one of the most prolific banjo makers of the mid-19th century. His unique design which involves a vaguely Fender-shaped headstock design and having a skin head on both the front and the back, became the icon of the American banjo in the decades before the American Civil War. Wunder Banjo's reproductions include all of Boucher's unique construction methods: Per the builder's web site this model has a 3-piece neck design, ebonized hardwood pegs in the modified Hill style, faux grain finish, single ply oak rims, painted mild steel hooks and tension rings, hand cut pegs from the original pattern, correct period varnish, 12-12 1/2" single ply oak rim, 6 hooks, ivory or rosewood nut. This banjo has a somewhat high action, which we presume was specified by the maker.   It takes only gut strings.  It is charming and beautiful and if you are a Civil War Re-enactor this would make a fine companion with which to sleep in a pup tent in the woods.
