Thinline & Semi-Hollow Guitars

Derived from a design dating back to 1957, this guitar is memorable for its hand-carved arch top and back. Collings says:  “Collings electric guitars are built with the finest materials available and feature custom pickups from Jason Lollar.”  We’d like to add that this model is made from solid woods (good luck finding that on the better known brand), and also that it is one of the most unearthly beautiful electric semi-hollow body creatures we have ever, with our own eyes, seen.

This is the legendary model, no longer being made in a six-string version, but remains a variation on the two-pickup (and extremely popular) Model 360 that any player and Rickenbacker fan will desire.  Inside the case is a cable, a Rik-o-Sound box, a Ric booklet titled “Guitar/Bass Care & Maintenance Manual” that was published in March, 1992.

Taylor says in their Product Description:  A figured maple top provides extra sizzle and style for this thinline electric. Yet with a flick of the 5-way switch, your tone goes from electric to acoustic, thanks to a combination of proprietary humbucking pickups and a Dynamic Body Sensor. Microdot fretboard inlays and chrome hardware are standard.

This is a most uncommon guitar – well, first of all 1960s Rickenbackers are not often seen, and of those that do turn up fewer still are hollow body 12-strings.   According to Richard R. Smith’s book called Rickenbacker Guitars, no data is available for production totals for 1967, but in 1968, if it’s any indication, Rickenbacker shipped just 28 of this model in the natural (MapleGlo) color.  Smith discusses the “Old Style” 360 versus the “New Style.”    

According to Gibson records the last guitar made with an A-prefix serial number in 1957 was A-26819.  This number is 10 numbers before the last guitar made that year, so one can safely say it is December 1957.   This acoustic archtop is in excellent condition, showing light normal signs of use that 55-year-olds show . . . .  THE PRICE WAS $4381 BUT NOW ON SALE in a major big way.   

 

This unbelievably clean example shows a few minor signs of having been held and played – but it is one unutterably original instrument.  It displays a beautiful three-tone sunburst top, along with uniform brown back, sides and back of neck.  It is indeed a thin-bodied hollow body guitar with a single open f-hole.  Where the treble f-hole would have been there is a long, amoebic crème colored pickguard (that gets progressively thicker in depth as it travels downward) which surrounds the single black oblong pickup in the neck position.

This guitar offers you sounds and versatility like no other electric. Its neck feels just like a fast action acoustic guitar and it has the bridge of your favorite acoustic, so the six-string player will feel right at home and may take off his or her shoes. But the sound – wow – you might as well book those gigs now ‘cause they will be a-comin’ in.

We have to say, from the get-go, that we LOVE this Eastman Strings (new) T386 thinline electric that was made from laminated maple for the top back & sides, having dual mounted humbuckers.  It is a 16" double cutaway with full block and also with hard shell case.  It is also the biggest bargain in a thinline that we are aware of.     Here’s how the maker describes it:   a full-size 16″ thinline made with a laminate maple top, laminate maple back and sides; this is versatile, responsive, with tons of tone and attitude!

If this guitar vintage Gibson semi-hollow body guitar from an extremely good period had been maintained in wholly original, excellent condition and unaltered in every way it could have been worth in the range of $6500. Luckily for you (since it makes a fine sounding guitar much more affordable) it has experienced a few changes (who among us hasn’t), and is also marked for life with a stamped “2” which is something like Hester’s “A.” And so, as a “player” with an complicated past, it can be yours for a lot less.

This thin, hollow, chambered guitar was custom-built for fingerstyle playing, and it’s one of the first (possibly the first) Renaissance RS-6 guitars with the wider fingerstyle spacing. It has a standard 25.5” scale, 1-3/4” nut width, and 2-5/16” string spacing at the saddle. The neck carve is a soft “vintage V” that is reminiscent of the best old Martin necks, and very comfortable.

Futuristic looks and out-of-sight sound! At last, the '55-era Falcon is once again available in a production model!
