#129187, Artist Award Blond

This rare 1975 Guild Artist Award guitar was owned by the legendary Dean Markley.  He bought it as part of the inventory of the guitar store he owned at the time. When he closed the store, he still had it.  It is new, old stock and has never been sold or even played. I think it's a fair bet to say that there would be no other blond Guild Artist Award in this condition.

The Artist Award is Guild's flagship jazz guitar. This fine instrument sports appointments seen only on ultra-deluxe instruments of the 30's and 40's such as nine plies of binding on both the body and the peghead. The deep ebony fingerboard is trimmed with three plies of inner binding on the face, just like the old Epiphone Emperor, whose ornate split-block inlay pattern was continued on the Artist Award as well. Even the f-holes are triple bound!

The guitar has a carved AAA spruce top, solid flamed AAA maple back and sides, 9-ply binding, maple neck and an ebony fretboard. the DeArmond floating pickup is attached to the neck and there is a single volume control mounted to the pickguard. The tone is rich and full, it is a wonderful sounding guitar, both plugged in and unplugged. There is beautiful inlay work on the headstock and fretboard and the tailpiece is work of art unto itself.

The back, sides and neck are carved from extravagantly figured chevron bookmatched tiger flame maple. The overall condition of this example we would characterize as “new old stock”, without finish checking, plating tarnish, or fretwear. A genuine 10/10 investment guitar.

The DeArmond 1100 Rhythm Chief floating single coil pickup has been a staple feature of Guild archtops since the mid-1950s. It continues to be one of the most sought after archtop guitar pickups today. Besides providing a natural, woody, acoustic tone, another innovative feature was the fingerboard mounting bar. This allowed installation of the pickup in the neck position of the Artist Award without interfering with the true acoustic nature of this masterpiece.

Guild made just a few of these beautiful 17-inch archtops per year using their most experienced and skilled craftsmen, making this fine guitar not only a great-sounding and beautiful instrument, but a collector's item as well. No words can describe what must be experienced--this certainly applies to the Artist Award.
